COLLOIDAL GRAPHITE
The value of colloidal graphite in the running-in of new and rebored engines is becoming more widely recognised. When used in new engines, this product—of which a special kind is made by E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} Acheson, Ltd., 40, Wood Street, London, S.W.1—forms, by absorption, an extremely thin film of graphite on the metal surfaces and fills in tiny cracks and abrasions. During the breaking off of any projecting irregularities, for instance, high dry friction is replaced by low graphite friction, which prevents metal to metal contact.
If at any time the normal oil film is temporarily broken, a graphoid surface maintains adequate lubrication for quite a long period.
Colloidal graphite has a special value in lubricating pistons and cylinder walls, because it is unaffected by heat and is capable of maintaining an oil film between the moving parts. It is also a factor in preventing piston rings from “gumming” in the grooves, and tends to reduce the formation of hard carbon.
It has a particular value in winter starting, because the graphoid surface formed by its use assists in spreading the oil film with greater rapidity. It is also stated that a reduction of wear is obtained when colloidal graphite is used for the lubrication of valve stems.
Acheson Colloidal Graphite is used during the assembly and “running-in” of A.E.C. engines.
