Armature windings, voltage, flux, and the use of carbon brushes.

To Na.{Mr Nadin} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} In this particular case, since the winding is on the armat- ures, the voltage at the brushes should be taken as a check of the flux passing through the armature, because one armature might have less losses because it had less flux. The armature should generate no current except that necessary to work the voltmeter. The brushes should be put in a neutral place with rather a narrow contact area, and they should be of carbon so as to have no local current under the brushes.
