X5420 X.4612 The rear O.S. brake damper was lost during the 10,000 miles in France on 10-G-111. This occurs when the brake drums have become abnormally hot with use of brakes on a long decline or as in this case, the brake shoes not returning to the normal position after being released and rubbing on the drum. The spring holding the damper deteriorates in strength and when travelling over rough roads the tension is not sufficient to prevent the dampers from being flung off. The cause of the brake shoes not returning in this case was due to the brackets (G.50358 and G.50753) on the axle holding the pull off springs having become bent over at right angles by stones hitting them and putting the springs out of action. These brackets, on previous tests, have become damaged and we would suggest that a distance piece between the bracket plates would prevent this. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/G.W.Hancock. | ||
