Mr. WORMALD re Axle Pivots. X168 7.1.14. DaS/C6114. Mr. Royce in his memo 73/P2114 says that if the stub portion of the Axle Pivots F.3696/7 is considered to be weaker than that of the previous standard, F.3253 that they should be scrapped. The following is my information on the subject, and I should be much obliged if you would kindly say whether you consider that the doubt as to the strength of F.3696/7 (F.3372/3 modified) is sufficient to justify scrapping them and replacing. viz:- Taking bending moments about the weak- est portion, the b/a stressing up to the elastic limit is - F.3253 . . . . . . 18,140 lbs. F.3696 (F.3372) 32,000 lbs. In an experiment Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}/Hyd/L/5813, it was shown that reducing the diameter of the stub on F.3253 right up to the U section, did not appreciably reduce the strength. In a test over obstacles on the track (AV/RSE/117313) and F.3253 type pivot ran for 540 minutes and then cracked in the U section.
