BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson} c to H.J. 4469 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}5/LG19. 6. 29. NITRO ALLOY. We have been trying out some nitro alloy pieces with a view to seeing what distortion we are getting. We attach a report on 2 bushes which were hardened in the Laboratory for us. It will be seen that in addition to growing a certain amount of distortion has taken place. Also the growing is not in the direction that one would expect on the bore. Superficially from all the experience we have so far had, it would seem that parts which are nitro alloy treated will have to be finished ground to size. This seems to conflict directly with the information given to us by Messrs. Aubert & Duval. However we do not seem to be able to do parts working to their instructions that we can make the hardening the final operation. Possibly you would like to ask Messrs. Firths if they are getting the same results. | ||
