JGM/PJA 11th July, 1941. W. A.{Mr Adams} Robotham Esq., Rolls Royce Ltd., DERBY. Dear Mr. Robotham, In the discussion which took place during my recent visit to you in connection with the squealing at corners of our 6.50/16 tyres, it was agreed that some improvement had been made in this respect, but that the fault had not been completely eliminated. It was, therefore, decided that we should make further experimental tyres which you would test at Derby. Accordingly, we are making the following tyres and these will be sent to you in the course of a few days and we shall advise you the serial numbers so that you may be able to distinguish one group from the other:- (1) Four - 6.50/16 tyres of Standard construction but moulded in the altered mould. The alteration to mould (which is now completed) consists of a reduction in depth of the outermost groove and at the same time the provision of undulating reinforcements at the bottom of this groove - the purpose of this being to give increased rigidity to the outer rib. (2) Four - 6.50/16 tyres exactly as item (1) but with the corners at the shoulders of the tread pattern rounded. (3) Four - 6.50/16 tyres as item (1) but with extremely low crown angle. (4) Four - 6.50/16 tyres as item (1) but with extremely high crown angle. p.t.o.
