To Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} x306 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}17/KW.15.10.36. Phantom III Brakes. Replying to S.2/E.13.10.36. We agree that it is surprising that more trouble was not experienced with the front brakes at Chateauroux. As was pointed out at the last Conference, the difficulty has been aggravated by the brakes being set on test so that they had not the full travel, this setting being necessary to prevent a rattle of the mechanism. The Experimental Dept. cars were not set like this. Furthermore, on our tests the brakes are always kept adjusted up. They are less spongy than production cars because the liners very quickly get fully bedded in. The fact remains that I did not experience lack of efficiency when I took the car to Spain, nor is there any record on the 15,000 miles test of this particular trouble.
