Dear Robotham: RE STEERING - Section 7050

Following report and attached chart will interest you. Each curve is the average of four or five readings:-

"Curves were required of torque on the steering wheel against torque on the rocking shaft for the 1.625" steering both hot and cold. A column was tested with Iso-Vis "Gear Oil", Motorine C, and Amber Gear Oil as lubricants. The readings taken for the curves were average readings. Every effort was made to prevent sticking from influencing the curves.

"The attached curves show the results, with Iso-Vis clearly superior both hot and cold. With Iso-Vis in the box, the operation was quite smooth; while with the other two oils, the operation was so sticky, particularly when hot, that at times it was extremely difficult to take an accurate reading."

This is directly at variance with your results, and, as already explained, I think this may be due to differences in hardness either of the worm or nut.

Yours very truly,

Maurice Olley
