W/P Sr. c. to Hd.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}22/KW.24.9.36. Chassis B-38-EF. Mr. P. Bernot. Referring to Sr/VA.1/LT.23.9.36. We feel it necessary to point out that we have had little or no experience of 'L' section rings in worn bores, and until we know more about the subject it would be somewhat of a gamble to fit these where the bores are worn as much as .010". Our own experience has been that if the big end bearings have cracked up the oil consumption of the car usually deteriorates, but this comes back to normal again when new big ends are fitted. Naturally we have no experience of this with bores worn as badly as those of B-38-EF. We do think, however, that it is quite probable that the oil consumption will be reasonably good after fitting Hall's metal big ends, as these have no greater clearance than white metal. We suggest that you defer fitting 'L' section rings to a Bentley car until you know that you can keep it under observation for some little time after the changeover.
