8 LITRE PHANTOM EXHAUST VALVE.

Whilst carrying out power tests on P.II. 27 unit and running at 3000 R.P.M. No.6 cylinder exhaust valve head broke away from the stem base, where the tulip radius commences.

In order to overcome valve bounce at 3500 R.P.M. the valves were fitted with double taper return springs Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}665/4 and the spring loading when seated is 90 lbs. as against 65 lbs. when using standard single springs.

This head has been run for 11 hrs. full throttle up to speeds of 3500 R.P.M. and according to specification the valves are standard material S/SLV.

It is the first exhaust valve to fail on the Phantom since they were strengthened up.
