Martindale} Messrs Rolls Royce Ltd. Derby. Your ref:Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}16/KW. Exptl.Dept. Dear Sirs, re: Your Order No.15494. In reply to your letter of yesterdays date, we beg to advise you that we have completed a sample Oil Level Gauge and are sending this off immediately under separate cover. We regret that the calibration of this instrument does not bring the pointer vertical when there are 1 1/4 gallons in the sump. As the Meter pointer is gravity controlled it would not be permissible to turn the instrument. We suggest however, that you mark the dial below the 1 1/4 gallon mark with one colour and above the 1 1/4 gallon mark with another colour so that the driver will be able to determine the level at a glance. We confirm our telephone conversation to the effect that this is a 'single wire' type instrument with 'earth' return, connections being as follows: Battery supply to terminal B on meter; Terminal on tank unit to terminal T on meter, and attach herewith wiring diagram. It is of course necessary that the case of the meter is 'earthed' and if a wooden instrument board is used we suggest that the connection is made under the fixing strap. It is of course understood that the single wire type of instrument is not so accurate as the three wire type instrument which we originally intended supplying, we think however, that you will find that the sample instrument will meet your requirements. Assuring you of our best attention at all times. Yours faithfully, for S. SMITH & SONS (MOTOR ACCESSORIES) LIMITED. [Signature] G.E. Russell ELECTRICAL ENGINEER.
