In view of the recent discussion on altering rear axle design, we have been very thoroughly into the question of saving cost on our rear axles. This could be achieved in two distinct stages: firstly alterations to the axle case without altering the internal design or type, and secondly, adaption of the half floating type. Considering the first type, we have arrived at the following figures, cancelling out parts which cost the same in all cases - | Type | Cost (Material & labour) | Remarks | |------------------------------------------------------------------------|--------------------------|------------------------------------------| | Present Ph.III design. | 90/- | | | Banjo - Scott type. | 45/- | Unsuitable material & unnecessarily heavy. | | Banjo - two halves welded top & bottom. | 53/- | | | Separate axle tubes as now; but made up of taper tube with butt welded end flanges. | 40/- | Lightest and cheapest. | | ||
