Recommendations for improving a test rig used for measuring water flow and heat dissipation in radiator matrices.

(6) The method of measuring the water flow is satisfactory, provided suitable orifice plates are used in the meters. During these tests the correct plates were not fitted and the meter was working on a part of the scale which was not finely graduated and hence did not give accurate measurements of flow.

(7) The supply of heat is not adequate to produce car conditions at maximum loads and speeds - the maximum amount of heat obtainable was approx. 2300 B.T.U's/min, whereas at least 8,500 B.T.U's/min. is required (if full scale tests are to be done on Bentley and Ph.III radiator matrices).

Summarising our suggestions for improvement of the rig, we recommend the following :-

(1) Use fan to draw air through length of straight ducting to matrix and deliver to atmosphere again - if possible increase air flow by increasing fan size and speed.

(2) Measure air as at present but make measurements at a number of points across the air flow. Alternatively, and preferably, use flat plate orifices at entry to duct.

(3) Substitute thermo couples at a number of points in the water inlet and exit for the thermometers at present in use, and use in conjunction with them Cambridge type pyrometers to measure the inlet temperatures and temperature drop of the water. Use sensitive glass thermometers (reading in 1/5°C.) at various points to read the inlet and exit air temperatures.

(4) Obtain suitable orifice plates for water meter so as to obtain maximum accuracy from instrument.

(5) If possible increase supply of heat; i.e., use a bigger engine or a gas boiler.
