DELCO-REMY CORPORATION ANDERSON, INDIANA February 23rd, 1934. Mr. W. A.{Mr Adams} Robotham, c/o Rolls Royce of America Inc., 34 West 57th Street, New York City, N. Y. Dear Mr. Robotham: As requested in your letter of February 22nd, I am enclosing outline of the Chevrolet starting motor, number 1853743. The fan ventilation of the LaSalle generator is accomplished by casting fins on to the pulley flange adjacent to the drive end of the generator. The end frame of the generator is finish machined to allow a reasonably close adherence between this surface and the edge of the fan blades. The result obtained is in effect a sirocco blower. Suitable air inlets, either in the form of serrated commutator cover bands, or inlets in the end frame, are provided. As to the allowable increase in output which this ventilation furnishes, we feel that the limiting factor in our present designs is current density in the brushes. We have been able to raise the hot output of the generator from 14 amperes up to 20 amperes, and at the same time decrease the maximum temperature by fifty or seventy-five percent. In other words, the generator as we now rate it runs comparatively cool. We have set the maximum current that can be carried by the brushes. Naturally, the area of the brushes is limited by the commutating requirements, and the diameter of the generator. I will appreciate receiving the latest direction indicators and switches, which you say you are having forwarded. This is a comparatively new art in America, and I am interested in collecting all the information available on the subject. Very truly yours, DELCO-REMY CORPORATION (s) H.{Arthur M.
