OUTSTANDING WORK ON SPECTRECodename for Phantom III.

From time to time troubles on the SpectreCodename for Phantom III are emphasised in G.W.H's. reports and also by other people at some of the SpectreCodename for Phantom III conferences. These troubles are as far as possible dealt with as they arise, some are easy and some are more difficult. We have now reached the position where a good many have been cleared up and the impression may be created that there is not a great deal to do on the car to get it fit for production.

With a view to clarifying the position therefore we give below a summary of some of the work that has already been done and a list of some of the major outstanding faults which have yet to be rectified.

Faults a cure for which has been found and which as far as we know at present should be rectified on the next car which goes to France.

(1) Crankshaft Periods. Larger slipper wheel has been fitted to eliminate this.

(2) Exhaust Valve Failures. All exhaust valves fitted are now solid.

(3) Tappet Wear. Chromium plated tappets have shewn that they will probably overcome this trouble.

(4) Leak from Rear Main Bearing. GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} has evolved a scheme which he states has eliminated this trouble which is applicable to existing design.

(5) Engine Roughness. Flywheel with increased inertia will be fitted to the next car.

(6) Textolite Timing Gear Failure. New hub for the timing gear has been designed and will be fitted to the next car.

(7) Misalignement of Engine and Gearbox causing Vibration. It is found that the tail bearing which has been designed overcomes this trouble.

(8) Oil Cooler Failure. The oil cooler burst in France. A later design has been fitted which is stronger but further strengthening may be
