Re Suggestion from D.Cole (Driver to Mr Ogden Codman)

Mr Barrington submitted a suggestion concerning the hand brake-lever, from the above driver.
Mr Cole suggested that the hand lever should be pushed forward to put the brake on, instead of being pulled toward the driver; this scheme would overcome the difficulty of reaching a hand lever, which is to some extent out of convenient reach of the driver.

The Committee considered this suggestion, and were of the opinion that the pull-on lever is more correct than the push-on type, owing to the inertia effect of the driver's weight when the car is decelerating, and that in the push-on form, the driver has no power or control on the hand lever in the event of his back leaving the back of the seat, as for instance in the case of a slightly incorrectly adjusted brake.

Mr Spinney was of the opinion that our hand levers required some considerable thought, the present design necessitated a very wide scuttle dash, owing to their unnecessary length. He believed the best scheme would be to shorten the levers as previously suggested.

The Committee agreed that Mr Spinney should provide Mr Bailey with an
