'D' SERIES PH.III - RADIATOR.

We understand that the second half of Ph.III 'D' series chassis radiators is held up because of possible modifications to -

(a) Matrix.
(b) Yoke bracing.
(c) Steam valve elimination.

With regard to item (a) a possible weight saving had been considered but in view of tests with the lightened matrix and experience on the last 15,000 miles Ph.III (32-EX) we have decided against this modification. There is, however, a possibility of a new type matrix being available within the next six months. We suggest, therefore, that the matrix is not released until the Order Office definitely require it.

(b) Yoke bracing. - the standardisation sheet for this has been withdrawn as it was decided that the gain did not justify the extra cost of the scheme. This portion, therefore, need not be held up.

(c) Steam valve elimination - we definitely cannot dispense with a steam valve on Ph.III so that the existing standard arrangement can be instructed except that the modif- ications to prevent seizing of threads and breakage of tower instructed by By/NS.{Norman Scott} should be incorporated.

This memo should clear up the question of what need be held up in 'D' series Ph.III radiator.
