E.M.F. is only, after all, about twice as great as it works out to be on the high rate discharge, so that in truth the actual true internal resistance of the battery does not enter into the charging question anything like as seriously as might at first have been supposed. It must not be forgotten, however, that improved plate separation from the point of view of life may at one and the same time put up not only the true ohmic resistance, but, by trestraining the escape of generated gases, the true back E.M.F. as well. The ultimate practical effect in the two cases is the same and for this reason we shall also give the results of terminal charging P.D.'s of fully charged batteries at various charging rates.

It will then be noted that terminal charging P.D.'s at lower rates of current are actually considerably less than true E.M.F's at higher rates.
