EXPERIMENTAL DEPT. REPORT NO. 2282.

The following experiments have been carried out on engine No. 129A in order to test the effect of using the fan with the engine set in a similar position to that when in the chassis, and with the radiator a distance of 100 m.m. from the fan blades.

(1) A test of the Oil Consumption and Power Curves was made.

The results of this test are shewn on Report No. H.22.

(2) The Indicated Horse Power of the Cylinders was taken and compared with a previous test under the same conditions but without the Radiator and Fan in position. The I.H.P. was found to be the same, viz:- 56.

(3) A further experiment was carried out to ascertain the minimum Oil Pressure which would suffice to lubricate the bearings of the engine. It was found that all the bearings could be efficiently lubricated down to an Oil Pressure of 1 lb. per sq. inch, the only big end bearing to show signs of over-heating being that of the Connecting Rod to No. 1 cylinder, which after running for ten minutes had attained a temperature of 170 C.
