Engine overheating, comparing the effectiveness of louvered bonnets versus shutters.

Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/LG15.10.21 re. the above I have already pointed out to you in my memo. EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}4/H10.10.21. paragraph 2. that Paris report - "that the tendency to boil and water temperature was reduced by testing the car on the same hill on which the engine previously boiled, with the sides of the bonnet open, these sides resting on the front wings". We have not received any report from Paris in this instance of the effect made on the overheating of this car with the shutters open and closed, but we have received recent information from them to the effect that shutters do not make any appreciable difference, a point which is also confirmed in your own reports. In dealing with this matter therefore, the point to settle which requires experimental work is the advantage with regard to overheating with the louvred bonnets compared with the size of the shutters which are required to equal the advantage achieved with the louvred bonnet. From an overheating point of view we are of the opinion, judging from past experience that the louvred bonnets are of much more advantage than the present shutters. MADE AT CROXLEY EP.{G.
