To Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/FD.{Frank Dodd - Bodies} (For Log Book) from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} 300a Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}1/AP.28.9.37 35-EX. - Run to Cornwall. Mileage 715 Petrol 66 galls Cons. 10.8 m.p.g. Interesting features:- Second overdrive gearbox 16.HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} No.16 unit with solid tappets. ---------- (1) Gearbox audible on overdrive at all speeds below 60 m.p.h. but true value for noise difficult to obtain because of crank periods not damped by Cadillac damper. Side shaft not good enough. When hot there is sometimes a loud growl when idling which might be due to box touching floorboards. On overdrive bad transmission rattle at 15 to 20 m.p.h. No gears could be made to come out of mesh on drive or overrun. (2) Tappets good. (3) Clutch not free from jaggers when hot particularly when manoeuvring in a confined space. (4) Brakes apart from occasional servo and drum squeaks, excellent. (5) Petrol gauge warning light does not work. (6) Smell of petrol when facing up hill needs investigation. (7) Heater rattles incessantly. (8) Driver's window rattles when slightly open. (9) Steering and handling good but tyre adhesion on wet roads leaves much to be desired. (10) Headlamps give good light in driving position. Dipped filaments give yellow light and are far too polite. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} | ||
