Dear Sirs,
For the attention of Mr. Dixon.
You may think that we have been a bit slow in not sending you any experimental pumps during the last day or two. The situation so far is that up till the time when you called, we had not had either of the high pressure pumps we are experimenting with on test for more than a couple of hours, and had not fully investigated them.
We have been experimenting more fully with the second one which we had in hand when you were here, and in the first place we find that with this pump we had to bring the armature back further than normal to allow for the impact washer. It was not possible to work to really close limits on this. This resulted in the pump requiring a minimum of 11 volts to function on our testing. We are suspicious that the steel spring which is pretty well coil bound constitutes a magnetic by-pass and is causing a reduction of power. We have therefore ordered some stainless steel springs and we should like to test these out before sending the pump on to you.
In order to get over the weakness at the beginning of the stroke with the impact washer fitted, we have found it necessary to shorten the stroke by 20 thou.
