COPY. RUDGE WHITWORTH LTD., Rudge Works, COVENTRY. Ref:- W. 12th June 1922. Rolls-Royce Limited, DERBY. Dear Sirs, With reference to telephonic conversation of this morning. I gather from your queries that my letter of the 8th inst., did not make certain points quite clear. The paragraph dealing with tight-ening up the wheels before having them removed was intended to convey that the wheels were slack by the dimensions shown, the figures being taken from the circumference of the locknut. This means that the wheels were being run in this slack condition and have never been properly tightened. Further confirmation of this is found in the fact that the wooden mallet in use on the car was quite incapable of tightening up a wheel, the spring in both the head and particularly the handle of this mallet being far too great to get any solid blow. The above does not mean to say that the wheels had never been tighter than when examined, because if an initial slackness is in the wheel it will soon multiply up, but it is quite definite that at least some slackness had been left and that no implement on the car would be capable of eradicating it. Yours faithfully, (Sgd.) J.A.Daniell. | ||
