X758 30.7.34. Hall's Car - B-35-AE. We took this car down to the track on 27.7.34. The body was as shewn in Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}6/KW.11.7.34, except that a side spare wheel carrier was fitted, the wings were cut down to regulation size, the head lamps were removed, but no cover was fitted over the rear seats. The speeds recorded were as follows - (1) Spare wheel on, fish tail on the exhaust pipe, air intake silencer fitted. Lap 1-41-4 secs. 1/2 mile 18 Speed 98.23 1000 (2) Spare wheel removed, fan belt removed, fish tail removed. Air intake silencer fitted. Lap 1-40 Speed 99.61 (3) As 2 but with spare wheel on. Lap 1-40-3 Speed 99.31 The tyres fitted were 5.5 x 18 Dunlop Triple Stud road racing, effective static circumference 90.25", which means at least 105 at 4500 R.P.M. with the 11 x 41 axle fitted. The half mile was taken over the railway straight against a head wind, with a following wind past the Vickers sheds at least 4,400 revs. were obtained. With the fan off the temp. did not exceed 82°, air temp. about 20°C. Smaller wheels having 88.25 effective dia; were tried but it was found that the engine tended to over-rev, on the fastest portion of the track. | ||
