1280 Experimental Dept. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std.1/AP. 5th December 1936. Messrs John Marstons Ltd., WOLVERHAMPTON. For the attention of Mr.Meats. Dear Sirs, Further to your letter of the 3rd inst., and our discussion of yesterday, the writer has been thinking over the question of strengthening our oil cooler, and has come to the conclusion that it would be most advantageous to endeavour to stiffen the side-plates by increasing their thickness (gauge) and not by sweating on plates as proposed. This is because inspection of the cooler casing shews that it will be difficult to get a cooler which is very much wider, into the present case, even by machining it, and as we should like to run this cooler on the test car which will be going to France shortly, the minimum of delay is desirable. Instead of determining the minimum desirable gauge of plate to be sweated to the present side plates, we should like you to determine the minimum gauge of side plate to withstand 200 lbs/sq.in. with the maximum deflection which you consider safe - up to .005" at centre of plate seems reasonable. Having done this, will you please make us up a cooler with this gauge side plates and a strengthened top plate of the type which you showed us yesterday, together with a bottom plate in one gauge thicker material - if we could have this some time next week, we shall be in time to fit it to the test car in question. We can then continue the tests with sweated on plates at leisure and determine which method is the best. By the way, did Mr.Meats take back the two damaged oil coolers E.4. and E.8. which we were examining yesterday. If so will you please not repair these until further instructions from us. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
