Fuel Injection

Considerable interest is being shown in direct fuel injection although Wrights and Pratt & Whitney would not admit that they were actively engaged in its development. From outside sources I have heard that while the engine firms are not aiming at adapting it to existing engines, they are working on it for new types. This would appear to be correct, as engine people said that they would be reluctantly compelled to adopt direct injection of fuel for wing engines of 3000 HP. and higher. It will also be necessary to inject directly with the new 100 Octane Safety fuel, which cannot be carburetted, and which does not spray satisfactorily with existing applications of the Bendix Stromberg carburettor.

Apparently work has been done on injection into the inlet manifold, as well as into the cylinder, and although the present tendency is to favour the inlet pipe, it is felt that ultimately injection will have to be into the cylinder. Incidentally, Mr Hobbs put forward the thought that the German interest in direct injection has in mind possible developments on flame control by means of which it will be possible to suppress detonation and run on 73 Octane fuel at 100 Octane outputs.

A merican Bosch are reported as having all information regarding the German schemes, and the late Dr. Achterberg of Junkers was said to be closely associated with Bendix. I was told that these two concerns were developing control schemes so as to be fully prepared when the engine people were ready to adopt direct injection. A small number of engines is is Service both cylinder and inlet pipe injection. From other sources I heard that Wrights are working on direct injection into a sleeve valve cylinder, and that the Navy had under development a secret project of Eclipse
