CARBURETTERS FOR ROLLS ROYCE F.X. X.3841
X.3933 X.3932

The most suitable carburetter we have found up to the present is the Stromberg NA{Mr Nadin}-Y6. It is a somewhat similar carburetter to the NA{Mr Nadin}-Y5, used on the Curtiss D.12, but is slightly larger, being suitable for a 2.4375" pipe. From particulars so far supplied, we have commenced a scheme using this carburetter. The Stromberg Co. advise us that they have already commenced the manufacture in London of carburetters for automobiles, and are in a position to extend this arrangement to cover aeroplane carburetters when the occasion arised. We have borrowed from the Air Ministry a Stromberg NA{Mr Nadin}-Y5, and they are also going to lend us another carburetter, but I do not think either of these will be suitable for our job. I think we should definitely decide to order two carburetters from the Stromberg people, unless you think the question of building the engine with carburetters in the vee can be allowed to wait until we have designed a carburetter ourselves.

Mr. Davey, of Hobsons, visited us yesterday, and in discussing this matter admitted that they had no suitable pattern of carb., except by considerable modification. Personally, as far as I can see, I should prefer to use a carb. based on the Claudel-Hobson AVT-70B, the one we are at present using on the E.XVI. and F.10. superchargers. The American carburetters would almost certainly require modification before they would pass Air Ministry conditions with regard to petrol heads. I think all the engines we are committed to supply will be with the supercharger, as I understand the Ministry's first order will be for engines with the blower, and the Westland people, to whom we have promised an engine, want it with the blower, so perhaps there is time for us to design the carb. to suit the engine. Exactly the same mixture pipes and intakes would not be suitable in the two cases.

The point is, do you think we should adapt the design of the Claudel Hobson carb. to our needs, and if so, should we keep our programme simple by concentrating on this and excluding the Stromberg carburetters?
