Levallois VA.7/ET.15.4.40. To Sr. Re: CHASSIS B.12.AW - PARIS TRIALS CAR Upon testing the above car yesterday morning with the front floorboards removed, we observed that the noise from the gearbox in question could also be heard when the car was driven in 3rd speed (direct drive); the noise, however, was very pronounced on the overdrive. If the Experimental Department have already issued instructions re the dismantling and erection of a Bentley V gearbox, I should be glad if you could manage to bring back with you a set of instructions. Upon dismantling the servo of your car, we found that a certain amount of a black, greasy, oily substance had found its way on to the liner, which would cause grabbing of the servo. We shall be glad if the Works will arrange to send us the following as soon as possible: A supply of "Bloomsbury Adhesive Tape" for fixing to the outside diameter of the servo. I GB.4586 liner for servo, with necessary rivets (Tinman's Head N°7). I Hoffmann XLS I3/4 thrust bearing complete for the clutch withdrawal mechanism. We are at present fitting up the gearbox removed from chassis B.14.AW, on which the servo liner is O.K. and quite dry. As per my memo Sr/VA3/ET.12.4.40 (the original of which is in your possession), I mentioned on page 3 that we reduced by about 2/3rds the loading on the Armstrong hydraulic (brake) damper. This is an error: we actually reduced the load by about 1/3rd. Kindly thank Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} for Blue Prints and instructions re Bentley V hydraulic dampers and servo mechanism, which will be very helpful. We have also received from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} a sketch showing the necessary modification to the oil pipe from the pump to the relief valve unit, when fitting a thermometer. Can you manage to bring back a thermometer with you? VA. VA | ||
