E.1801. 26328. F.H. Royce Esq., La{L. A. Archer} Villa Mimosa, Pav Le Lavandou, Var FRANCE. 2nd April, 1928. Dear Mr. Royce, Generators for Chilean Naval Boats --------------------------------- Since I received your letter our customers have asked us to modify the commutator design of these machines and we have had to have our general arrangement drawing re-drawn. I enclose a Blue Print of this revised drawing. You will see that the commutator is now shown turned round on the shaft. This has been done at the request of customers so that they can remove the commutator ring and fit new segments. We have told customers that we strongly deprecate this, our sole object in putting the clamping nut at the back being to prevent commutator repairs being carried out on the lines they suggest. Our commutators are pressed together hydraulically, and for good running of the dynamo it is essential that they should be a sound and solid job. Obviously, if they repair the commutators in the manner they suggest, the commutator will never be tight again. We hope, however, that the occasion will never arise to necessitate the taking apart of the commutators. My replies to your criticisms of the design of these dynamos are as follows:- (1). We are compelled to use ball and roller bearings the advantages being:- (a). Saving in overall length of the machine. (b). No trouble due to oil spilling. (2). The most common practise in use is to mount bearings in the manner shown on drawing B.254, i.e., the inner race being a press fit on to the shaft. (3). The end covers are split horizontally in the same manner as yoke. There is no room in this instance to withdraw armature endways. (4). We are to supply totally enclosed machines arranged for pipe ventilation. We have no option. | ||
