---------

We recommend that the improved type of split [handwritten insertion: aluminium mechanism] piston made to drawing N. 2820 should be adopted as soon as possible. This piston is similar to the present split piston except that the design has been gone over, bearing in mind the fact that it is a split piston. The present split aluminium piston we are using was never designed for the job. This modification chiefly consists of an alteration to the core box. Mr. Royce in his design of cast iron piston, has incorporated the features on the improved aluminium split piston, which we recommend. We have run three sets of these pistons - one set is fitted to the 10,000 miles car another set is fitted to the Drivers Demonstration Car. the results so far shew them to be an improvemnt over the present ones. We think it is urgent that we should adopt these pistons without delay because we know that the present design of split piston has certain faults. This latest design of split piston should tend to overcome [strikethrough: to] reduce those faults.

I still feel, however, that if we desire absolute consistent silence after years of running, we shall have to adopt the cast iron pistons. It think our policy
