THRUST FOR BEVEL PINION GLEASON GEARS.

We have had several failures of the single thrust bearing on the bevel pinion when using Gleason Bevel Gears. Although the double thrust bearing has been standardised, it will be some considerable time before they get through on to the cars. We feel that we ought to make strenuous efforts to get the double thrust bearing fitted, even if it means scrapping parts. We also recommend that the design of the double thrust should again be gone over to see whether it is not possible to apply a double thrust without scrapping both the housing and the propeller shaft. We feel this is very necessary because we are fitting a lot of Gleason Bevels to Repair Cars and also we feel that a number of cars on the road will have to be changed to the double thrust.
We are making tests to prove whether it is possible, if we improve the lubrication on the present plain thrust, to make it reliable. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} has instructed a scheme for this.
