VISIT TO CONDUIT STREET RE
"HALF CHARGE" SCHEME ON 58-GN.

On arrival at Conduit St.{Capt. P. R. Strong} I had a talk with PN.{Mr Northey} during which I gave him explanations of the characteristics of the various dynamos and of the half charge scheme in particular. I also explained to him at some length the characteristic features and operating possibilities of the auto charge control switch.

After lunch a trip was made in the car 58-GN with the object of observing the cutting in and output performance both on the full output and the reduced rate with the half charge resistance as originally fitted, this being a resistance of rather high value which, as explained in the fourth paragraph of our EFC1/W26.11.30, was intended to be a compromise value for the average case. It was agreed decisively that this high value of resistance was not suitable for the Town running to which 58-GN is at present subject. Accordingly, we changed the resistance to the lowest value (6") half charge resistance which I had taken with me. No other changes of the resistance unit were made as there was no further evidence to be gained by so doing.

Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}'s and PN{Mr Northey}'s complaint is, however, not entirely on the score of low output due to the half charge resistance, but largely on the fact of the rather late cutting in of the new high output dynamo in any circumstances (which cutting in is, of course, rendered progressively still later on half charge the greater the resistance of the resistance unit included).

On return from the run I had further consultation with PN.{Mr Northey} on the whole matter and gave him a further and more detailed description of the auto charge control switch pointing out its possible advantages and thus enabling him definitely to form the opinion that experimental work on these units should be proceeded with.

My visit concluded with a conference of PN.{Mr Northey} and myself with Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} in which the whole matters i.e. both of the half charge scheme and the auto charge control switch were further discussed. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} appreciated the fact that
