Aluminum Company of America 2211 DUNN ROAD Detroit, Mich. March 13, 1934 Mr. W. Arthur Robothan, Detroit Athletic Club, West Adams Street, Detroit, Michigan. Dear Mr. Robothan:- Enclosed is blue print of the Dodge 3 1/4" T-slot piston, two rib design, which we discussed over the telephone this morning. Will you kindly check this piston over to make certain that it can be used for experimental tests in the Rolls Royce motor. Please check in particular the ring specification. While the pin diameter in this Dodge piston is 1/8" larger than the Rolls Royce, there is a possibility that our piston Plant can cast this boss solid, which would permit the use of the 3/4" diameter pin. We might introduce a small amount of porosity, which in my opinion would not be objectionable for experimental work. I wired Cleveland for information on this possible change, but as yet have not received an answer. You will notice there is 3/64" finish allowed on the top of the head. If you are willing to accept pistons in which the heads do not clean up 100%, we may be able to machine these pistons with a distance from the pin to the top of the head of 2 1/32" instead of 2". This together with 1/4" longer connecting rod will place the head of this piston in the same relative location as your standard Rolls Royce piston with a 2 9/32" dimension. The cost of these pistons completely machined less alumiliting will be $4.00 each. Undoubtedly you can have the pistons alumilited at Cadillac. Please advise if the diameter at the bottom of the piston as specified on the print, 3.2485 to 3.2480 will be suitable for your requirements. Delivery can be made to you at Detroit in about ten days after receipt of release. Yours very truly, ALUMINUM COMPANY OF AMERICA N. C. Barnes. Sales Engineer NCB:JS{Mr Johnson's Secretary} 439 | ||
