V2200. To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Copy to [text struck through] re Vacuum-Clutch Control. Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}4/E22.2.32 [Stamp: RECEIVED 23 1932] Referring to your memo. to R.{Sir Henry Royce} of the 30th Jan. and memo. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} which you circulated dated the 13th inst., I am glad to see that you have asked Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} to look thoroughly into this matter whilst in America and, if possible, to bring back some parts. I do not think we ought to be discouraged by R's remarks as one is not quite sure that he appreciates the true purpose of this device and the fact that, if it is really any good, it is the sort of thing that the public will ask for. You may have seen Malcolm Campbell's article in last Friday's "Daily Mail" wherein he said that on American cars one of the outstanding refinements making for easier driving is the vacuum clutch.
