EJS/MWD Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. YOUR REF. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}8/MA 3rd Nov. 1936. Dear Sirs, Mechanics Propellor Shaft for Experimental Chassis. subject. We thank you for your letter of the 30th ultimo on the above Enclosed is Drawing No. WDM/272 showing a typical shaft with Size 4C Joints which we would recommend for your loading conditions. We produce these shafts in the ordinary commercial manner, tested in a speed lathe to run free from vibration and whip up to the rated speed - in your case 4500 r.p.m. - but we have no facilities for static and dynamic balancing. We fear, therefore, the complete shaft as produced by us would not be acceptable to you. On the other hand the joints are machined all over, as well as the end fitting yokes, and we would suggest, therefore, that we supply you with a pair of joints for you to build your own shaft. We should be pleased to deliver a pair of these joints to your Works for £2. 10. 0.. In regard to the fitting yokes, to make a definite proposal we should have to have the details of your stubshafts on which they are to be mounted. Assuming they would machine out of our stock forging, and that they have either taper bore or a splined bore for which we have a suitable broach, we could supply a pair of these yokes for £1. 5. 0., delivered to your Works. Awaiting your further instructions, we are, Yours faithfully, BENJAMIN WHITTAKER LTD. E.J. Surman. Enc. 1.
