C O P Y. C5/C.12.4.38. We have recently had a case where a customer asked an Inspecting Engineer to give her his opinion as to the condition of a secondhand car that she was thinking of purchasing. This was given, in a purely personal capacity, but the car was afterwards sent to the Works and more work was found to be necessary than had been expected. The customer now writes complaining to us that she had been misled and had purchased a car she would not have done had she not been given this private opinion in the first instance. This is a note to remind all officials that if they should be asked to give an opinion on a seconhand car, whether by a personal friend or not, they should say they are not allowed to give an official opinion on behalf of the Company and if an opinion is required the correct procedure is to send the car to one of our Repair Departments for examination and report.
