20 HP. REAR SHOCK ABSORBER.
--------------------------

[The following paragraph is struck through with a single diagonal line]
Referring to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}3/LG.5.11.28. and Hm{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs}12/W. 12.11.28., and Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}3/LG.9.11.28., I have been very carefully over the limits, and have been able to make one or two slight modifications. I have reduced the clearance on the small end bearing for the shock damper lever to a positive .00025" with a limit of minus ¼".

In regard to the links and the pins for same, we have reduced the clearance to a positive .00025" with a plus ¼" limit in the hole and a minus ¼" limit on the pin. These limits are just workable, but that is all. I cannot say they are really a commercial proposal, but they may tide over the present difficulty for a time. It is certain, however, that if we are driven to such fine limits to prevent the knock, no car will be able to run for any reasonable length of time, say 5,000 miles, without increasing these clearances again due to wear, and bringing us back to where we were.

We are putting through alterations covering the above in the absence of any other scheme to deal with this trouble, but we would point out in so doing that we are not of the opinion that the original limits and clearances do not constitute a really first class job.
