ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. INSTRUCTIONS. To Technical Committee Order No. Customer's No. X101 Re Worm Gears. I have carefully considered the question of using a Buttress thread in any Worm gear with a smaller angle of obliquity forward than an reverse, as suggested by Mr Whitehead. As regard the efficiency of any obliquity of thread tooth there is by calculation no difference, as the pressure on the tooth & the surface carrying such pressure both increase in same ratio. The only varying effect mathematically is any slightly increased pressure on the journal bearings of worm & wheel. Altho mathematically, no difference can be found in practice the tooth with increased obliquity is best - owing to the fact that the smaller obliquity causes interference Signed This Sheet must be filed on completion of the work. | ||
