X122 To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} re Peregrine Engine Mounting. With reference to the end flexibility of the Peregrine engine mounting affecting the clutch operation, R.{Sir Henry Royce} is proposing to overcome this trouble by anchoring the inner end of the clutch pedal shaft to the crankchamber with a horizontal link so that the clutch shaft is located thereby in a horizontal plane on the inner end only, and the force of disengaging the clutch will then become self-contained. The clutch pedal shaft will still be maintained as regards its vertical position by its present mounting but must be provided with a horizontally slotted hole in the supporting member to allow it to follow the movement of the crankchamber due to temperature expansion and other causes. In the case of the Bensport we understand that the clutch pedal shaft is being supported vertically by a link from the crossmember carrying the rear end of the engine but is located fore and aft by a horizontal link anchored to the crankcase.
