X.4383 - RE NOISY DYNAMOS. X4608

We have had a further case of dynamo noise, apparently being due to stiffness of the bearings, and being cured by easing the bearings, whereas on the dynamo which we had fitted with the cast iron end bracket, the fitting of this bracket of itself did not appear to cure the noise.

If EP. {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} has further machines with the cast iron end brackets for trial, it is suggested that he should note the condition of the bearings, i.e. as to whether the dynamo is slightly stiff or not to rotation when all the brushes are lifted.

As stated elsewhere our most promising experiment appears to be the armature with two coils per slot. This appears likely to give much improved commutation and also lessen noisiness in operation.
