| E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from Sft.{Mr Swift} [Crossed Out] Sft{Mr Swift} to Mr. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} R.. [Crossed Out] GORT [Handwritten] Sft{Mr Swift}5/BH.1.1.34. BENTLEY - SELF ALIGNING BRAKE EQUALISER ASSEMBLY. Referring to your E.1/HP.5.12.33, as agreed with you on Saturday morning, now that we have assembled a set of the self aligning Brake Equalisers on the Bentley Chassis, we are satisfied that this design meets our requirements both from a quality and economical point of view. The freedom obtained with this scheme is better and more uniform than is the case with the 20/25 HP., 40/50 HP. or Bentley present design, in addition to which the saving is appreciable as follows:- The time for Bentley existing design is 3 1/2 bonus hours. With the new scheme, the time of assembly to Chassis could represent a bonus time of 45 mins. approximately, as against 3 hrs. 25 mins. bonus time for the 20/25 HP. and 5 hrs. 20 mins. bonus time for the 40/50 HP. We consider a bonus time of 45 mins. would be sufficient for the 20/25 HP. and in the case of the 40/50 HP. owing to the slight difference in the method of assembly to the Chassis, this would probably cost a little more than 45 mins. We should be very pleased if a standardization of this type of Brake Equaliser Assembly could be urged for all cars. There are a few points you promised to look into:- (1) The question of whether the differential boxes could be bolted together with one type of screw or bolt instead of of two different types as at present. (2) Instruct longer bolts for the adjustable bracket. (3) Consider in new design larger Bearings. This would eliminate some of the brazing operations. (4) Provide similar scheme of brake Equalisers for both 20/25 HP. and 40/50 HP., and in the case of the latter you promised to endeavour to dispense with the centre bracket on the hand brake equaliser. | ||
