1280 Experimental Dept. Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} /Std.5/MH. {M. Huckerby} 14th. November 1938. The Leyland & Birmingham Rubber Co. Ltd., Leyland, LANCS. For the attention of Mr. Gollop. Dear Sirs, We are again forwarding to you two hose connections (curved ones in this case) which have been run on one of our experimental cars, and the condition of which is far from satisfactory. The connections have been in use for about 6 weeks and have covered 15,000 miles - you will note that the inner rubber envelope has become detached from the canvas in places. We would like to have your opinion on these defects and the cause of same - in the case of these special curved connections we regard this trouble as very undesirable in view of the relaatively high cost of replacing these units. We would add for your information that we have been using a phenol base corrosion inhibitor in the water (sample bottle sent to you with connections) but Laboratory and NPL tests have shown negligible action on normal rubber hose with this inhibitor. Yours faithfully, for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
