We thank you for EFC1/T31128., and note both Messrs Lucas' and your remarks re. bifocal dipping.

In spite of all that Messrs Lucas' have said we think that since this is a very cheap experiment to try we should have one car so fitted. Messrs Lucas' chief objection to the scheme is that it is not their patent. The objection that a large angle of twist cannot be obtained without distorting the beam may apply in some cases, but in the case of the C.A.V. and Bosch, both filaments are on the axis of the reflector, one being shielded by means of a cap so that only a portion of the beam is used.

With reference to the experimental cars - India & 'SS{S. Smith}' - we have instructed the following:

12-G-4. BARKERLITE COUPE. That this car be fitted with fixed lamps RB.{R. Bowen}70. type and a central 3rd. lamp (Stephan Grebel) permanently dipped and twisted - see N. scheme 2656. We therefore do not understand your reference to this car being fitted with pneumatically operated Lucas dippers.

14-G-4 HOOPER SEDANCA. That a set of the latest Lucas [Handwritten: Electrically Dipping Reflectors.] ordinary lamps (presumably R.160.S. type you mention) should be fitted to this car.

'SS{S. Smith}' 18-EX. BARKER SPORTS SALOON FOR R.{Sir Henry Royce} We have arranged with Mr. Oliver Lucas at Olympia that he would supply us with a set of P.100. headlamps having dipping and twisting reflectors. These are to be operated by a mechanical control mechanism designed by ourselves. So far we have had no details of this lamp. Should it not be ready in time for this car we shall fit a 3rd. lamp scheme or our own dippers, and transfer the Lucas dipping reflector lamp to 19-EX. - Hooper Sedanca. [Handwritten: This appears to be highly probable.]

'SS{S. Smith}' 19-EX. HOOPER SEDANCA. Following on the mechanically operated dipping reflectors on P.100., Messrs Lucas' have promised to supply us with a set of lamps having dipping reflectors with electrical operation. We propose fitting these to this car.

'SS{S. Smith}' 20-EX. This car is not yet instructed.

HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} has all the copies of our correspondence with Messrs Lucas. In future we will see that you receive copies of letters dealing with this matter.
