contd:- -3- OUR COMMENTS. loose but this may not have been tightened up properly at the start. of Dunlop wheels on 3-Goshawk 11 (limousine car) which will be run about this country. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} reports that R.{Sir Henry Royce} is very much in favour of using Dunlop ww wire wheels. The steering works well except for the jerking mentioned in previous report. The ball joints, however, are worn loose and the cross steering tube joints rattle badly. We shall have to adjust them. You might send a set of leather covers out with the next car so that we can fit them. The direct drive gear works out especially on rough roads and it I think something will have to be done to prevent this. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} reports that R.{Sir Henry Royce} is considering altering the design of these joints. We are also now tackling the question of obtaining satisfactory leather covers for these joints. This is rather serious but it was noted on this car on test that the 3rd. gear was very stiff to engage. Action has been taken for the top gear to be made more correctly so that they will slide into mesh more freely. This fault is not taking place with other cars and we are writing Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} for more information on this matter. The carburation filter has become entirely choked up on two occasions at intervals of 200 miles. It seems that a filter with a settling chamber is desirable. This morning we had to spend several hours taking down the crankcase oil filter as this had become blocked with fluff, dirt and bits of metal. The oil we have put in has been perfectly clean and was in sealed tins - goodness only knows where the dirt comes from unless it was in the engine to start with. We will see if the trouble recurs. A point for R.C. attention. We take it that what is now happening on this car is what will happen in the hands of the customer. On this point we are asking Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} to report further as the engine was sent out with with the filter system cleaned out and fresh oil inserted after testing. The brakes are now squeaking rather badly and I think you have still to find a cure for this. Their efficiency is reasonably good but not as good as at the start. This is rather disappointing as the brakes in construction and material are the same as 4-Goshawk-11 (Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}car). We are asking Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} to send a report on the condition of the brakes as soon as he finds the opportunity of doing so as we have no improvements to suggest in this direction, nor have we any cars at the W. of contd:- | ||
