32-EX. PHANTOM III.

New Type Lucas Headlamps.

Replying to By/RD.4/B.17.8.37, we agree that the driving light given by these lamps is excellent for long distance and straight roads, but that we should prefer more light on the sides of the road. We saw a scheme at Lucas for fulfilling this requirement, consisting of a piece of ribbed glass which was placed behind the front glass of the lamp for about 1/4 of the way up as shown in the sketch.

The ornamental point at the top of the glass is bad, as it is very difficult to clean the glass round it, so that there is always a dirty corner which shows up badly.

The cases are not sufficiently dust and moisture proof, and the reflectors lose efficiency accordingly.

We have not yet had the opportunity of fully testing the dippers with the 20 ozs. spring.
