X 3499. C. to C.O. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gib.2/MA. November 12th, 1932. Messrs. S. Smith & Sons Co. Ltd., 26-33 Cox Street, Livery Street, BIRMINGHAM. For the attention of Mr.Eckford. Dear Sirs, We have returned to you under separate cover a colorstat for modification, which is, increased diameter of spindle. The spindle of the returned unit broke when under maximum load test. The enclosed drawing D.52904 gives full particulars of the modification required. We have found it necessary to fit a 100 lb. spring to assist closing and in order to do this a collar had to be fitted as shewn inked in on the drawing (Marked A). Unfortunately the small filling tube prevents us from using the "stepped" portion of the base for the spring. (Marked B). On future units could this be arranged so that this "step" could be used for a spring if required. We understand that you have another unit at your Works having the filling changed from Allyl Alcohol to Ethyl Ether. The modified spindle also applies to that unit and if you have not already despatched it to us would you please modify it accordingly, regarding dia. and threads maintaining the existing length. Will you please treat the matter as very urgent as the aircraft are now ready for test flights. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
