Dear Blackith,

With reference to your letter of 21st. September, the bearing rig mentioned in my previous letter refers to a Rolls-Royce crankcase fitted with a crankshaft, the pins of which have had weight added to them. The engine is driven by an electric motor and this produces the worst form of main bearing load we know of.

Obviously, it cannot replace the main engine tests, but we regard it as being a potentially valuable means of comparing modifications which are made to the bearing alloy. We have not done a great deal with it yet, and in fact, are not perfectly certain what are the best conditions of running which should be adopted.

You may regard this bearing rig as being too cumbersome for your purpose, but it is available for your inspection.

Yours sincerely,
