1220 HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}2/R.20.2.37. OIL CONSUMPTION - P.III. Top over-oiling and poor oil consumption is becoming the most serious complaint on Phantom. We rely almost entirely upon the efficiency of the valve grummet to prevent top over-oiling, and these do no retain their efficiency for more than 1,000 miles. The main trouble is that the bottom spring coils and washers are flooded with oil which is sucked down the inlet valve guides. With this in view, the combination of LeC.5331 and LeC.5533 shows the whole valve mechanism raised .500 and clear of the oil. Will you please produce the necessary parts for trial on one of our experimental cars comprising the following:- LeC.5331. E.88491 Packing pieces under pedestal. E.88492 " E.88493 Dowels. E.88494 Lengthened Studs. E.88505 Rocker Cover. E.88501 Push Rods. Above are shown in instruction By/CS2/EH.6.11.36. LeC.5533. This to be Ex detailed, and with above, completes the job. .500 longer valves Inlet & Exhaust. .500 " guides. .500 packing pieces under the springs. Will you please regard this job as very urgent, as Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} wants to know the result of this experiment on account of the continuous complaints received from customers.
