Ethylene-glycol (sold in U.S. as "Eveready Prestone", by the United Carbon Co.) has been used by us in a 30% mixture with water for some years past as an anti-freeze on the cars. It has a boiling point of 387°F and a freezing point somewhere around - 40°F. {Mr Friese} It is superior to glycerine in not foaming, and to alcohol in not boiling away. It does not corrode anything in the system.

Its only difficulty is an almost uncanny ability to find its way through minute crevices which calls for great care in making the gasket-joints and rubber joints, water pump gland etc.

It is rather expensive, costing about $3 a gallon, but if the joints are tight and a car is operated much during the winter there is a real saving compared with alcohol. I have personally operated a car without trouble through the heat of summer with a 30% Prestone mixture in the radiator and though the temperature ran higher than with plain water, there was no sign of boiling.

I think Mr. Royce might be interested in this.

Yours faithfully,
