Herewith is N. Sch.4230 which shews the suggestion which by making the shock damper a self contained unit in the spring cylinder, enables the loads to be tested independently of the spring suspension.

It also allows access to the shock damper valve to be gained from the outer end of the spring instead of the inner end, as now.

With reference to the replenishment valve, we have shown a suggestion from Experimental Department that they should be buried in the main valve housing piece, the contention being that on existing shock dampers they are buried in the pistons, and do not give trouble, and it will be easy to replace the whole shock damper.

This drawing shews the shock damper assembly suitable for the existing variable rating suspension shewn on N. Sch.4177 and we shall send a further sketch shewing the slight modifications needed to apply it to the existing constant rating suspension.

Subsequently we will send a drawing shewing how the additional room given by the new arrangement can be utilised to improve the variable rating suspension, should it be proved that this system has worth-while merits.
